A word from Mariah

(adapted from the Glitter Soundtrack) –

I, I enjoy glitter. This glitter is starting now!

I, I enjoy glitter. This glitter is starting now!

I WANT glitter!

I NEED glitter!

I LOVE glitter!

GLITTER…

Just good advice:

So when you feel like hope is gone,

look inside you and be strong,

and you’ll finally see the truth

that the glitter lies in you

_gaia gallery featuring new works by Agnieszka Wszolkowska on view now!

READ BETWEEN THE CELLS
Agnieszka Wszolkowska has pushed Braille beyond its original purpose as a written language for the blind. She has explored it as a visual code. Her paintings are bold expressions of color, with the subtle contrast of embroidery thread. The dramatic images are appealing on both a conceptual and emotional level.

In this exhibit Agnieszka Wszolkowska brings us the entire alphabet in representations of individual Braille cells. The paintings stand alone, but together they pulsate against each other and create a charged, exciting experience.

Congratulations Agnes on a successful opening! Agnes has also recently launched a new website! http://www.agnieszka-wszolkowska.com/

Muscato, Larysa Myers, Cristine Posner, Sharone Vendriger, Nicole Wilson
Curators: Doris Caçoilo and Maya Joseph-Goteiner

_gaia is pleased to present the culminating exhibition of the Wonder Women Residency Project WW6: New News is Old News (NNION.) The curators invited ten artists from the New York/New Jersey area to participate in an eight week program addressing the questions: Who mediates the news? How is social media changing your foundation of news? Can technology keep up with history? When was the last time you read the paper? is journalism dead? NNION artists explore personal and cultural understanding and experience of media; the different perspectives of journalism online vs. print; the future of news.

Newspaper stories no longer fit the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of news as “a report of recent events: previously unknown information.” In many respects, we have created an endless source of updated information online and while few people have the time to read the entire newspaper, even fewer can keep up with the minute-to-minute updates via Twitter, blogs, online publications, and RSS feeds.

Projects address the changing voice of news, its’ outlets and content.

Wonder Women: _gaia Aims to Fix the Art World’s ‘Problem with Women’ … One Woman at a Time
By Brendan Carroll • Apr 25th, 2011 • Category: Arts, Lead Story

The women of _gaia’s most recent Wonder Women residency (All photos: Steve Gold)
This story also appears in the Spring 2011 issue of NEW magazine.

More than half of artists working today in the United States are women. Despite these large numbers, many female artists live on the fringe, eking out an existence in relative obscurity. The hallmarks of art world booty – museum retrospectives, solo exhibitions in blue-chip galleries, private and public commissions – go mostly to men, not women.

Just how bad is it for women in the art world?

According to an encyclopedic demographic and employment study released in 2008 by the National Endowment of the Arts:

* 5 percent of works in museums are by women.
* 17 percent of works in galleries are by women.
* 30 percent of Guggenheim grants go to women.
* 33 percent of art-faculty members are women.
* Women artists’ income is 30 percent that of the income of men.

This does not sit well with Newark native and Downtown Jersey City resident Doris Caçoilo (seen standing at right). So in 2002, she and longtime friend Amie Figueiredo brought together a group of women to begin organizing around women’s issues, activism and art. They named their organization _gaia, after the Greek goddess of Earth.

“The art world has a problem with women,” Caçoilo says. “We need to fix this.”

©Melissa MacAlpin, ...and all of this is metaphor, Love stories from the NYTimes

_gaia works to fix this through a number of avenues. It operates as a collective of member artists and activists who “actively promote and support the work of local women artists,” as the group’s statement reads. _gaia also puts together intensive artist residencies each year, runs a studio space for its members, hosts monthly art openings, and partners with other local groups for shows and projects.
