DEAD ZONE
New work by Christine DaCruz and Doris Caçoilo

The artists have created site specific installation and photography in response to a recent visit to the Buffer Zone in the city of Nicosia, Cyprus. The Dead Zone refers to the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus which runs for more than 112 miles along what is known as the Green Line. The zone partitions the island of Cyprus into a southern area effectively controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, and the northern area controlled by the Turkish army. Some 10,000 people live in the “Dead Zone.”

WONDER WOMEN RETELL THE NEWS

New News is Old News exhibition at The Gowanus Studio Space
November 11 – November 25, 2011
166 7th Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11215
Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday 3pm-8pm and by appointment

Opening Reception: Friday November 11, 2011, 7pm – 10pm

((Brooklyn, 11/11/11): _gaia together with its collaborators in Cyprus: The Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), the European Mediterranean Arts Association (EMAA) and Rooftop Theatre Group present the New News is Old News: A Wonder Women Project at The Gowanus Studio Space.

In January 2011, _gaia studio invited 10 New York & New Jersey based artists to participate in their residency program Wonder Women, exploring the changing media landscape in a project called ‘New News is Old News.’ The work was completed and exhibited at Gallery Aferro in Newark, NJ. Its curators Doris Cac?oilo and Maya Joseph-Goteiner along with three of the artists, Christine DaCruz, Sharon De La Cruz and Lindsey Muscato traveled to Cyprus upon invitation by the Cypriot organizers, Alana Kakoyiannis, on behalf of CCMC, Ozgul Ezgin on behalf of EMAA & Ellada Evangelou, on behalf of Rooftop to stage a similar program with artists in Nicosia and to present the culmination of the week-long process in an exhibition at the Peace Room in Nicosia.

On November 11, 2011 the work from both parts of the residency project will be exhibited at The Gowanus Studio Space. Artists and curators from Cyprus will travel to NYC to join the local artists for this special reunion of Wonder Women. During the residency, the curators and selected artists: US based Christine DaCruz, Mairikke Dau, Sharon de la Cruz, Melissa MacAlpin, Escobar-Morales, Lindsey Muscato, Larysa Myers, Cristine Posner, Sharone Vendriger, Nicole Wilson and Cyprus based Heleniq Argyrou, Kakia Catselli, Eser Kececi, Gokce Kececi Sekeroglu, Costantia Manoli, Maria Petrides and Julie Sandor met for critique sessions and discussions related to the media.

In their projects for the exhibition, the artists focus on communication and the content of news in US and Cypriot media, paying particular attention our changing relationship to news. Among the many collaborations and discussions the projects emerged as individual and collective experiments. Christine Da Cruz and Maria Petrides collaborate to collect oral histories and create embroidered portraits of women. Sharon de la Cruz uses the American cultural iconography of Aunt Jemima to present her vision of Crooked Images. Melissa MacAlpin illustrates love stories from the NY Times. Lindsey Muscato considers the physical experience of reading a broadsheet illuminating details from newspaper articles in her drawings of controlled coffee spills. Julie Sandor deconstructs TV media consumption using found video.

All 17 artists will show a selection of the work created in the US and Cyprus residencies in a group exhibition at The Gowanus Studio Space beginning Friday, November 11th at 7:00PM and will remain open until Friday, November 25th

The project is made possible through the generous support of the U.S. Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program (BSP) as well as through a crowd sourcing initiative launched by _gaia studio using Kickstarter and our hosts Gowanus Studio Space.

365 Days of Print
AN EXHIBITION OF ARTISTS MINING MEDIA

Oct. 1 – Oct. 27

Artists’ Panel: Oct. 20, 5:30 p.m. at the auditorium (adjacent to the gallery)

Gallery Location: 100 Culver Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07305

Gallery phone number: 201-200-2496

Comprised of works by over forty artists from the online project of the same name, “365 Days of Print: An Exhibition of Artists Mining Media” catalogues the struggle and challenge to process, respond to and engage with the evolving media landscape, its images and content. Artists have used audio, collage, photography, embroidery, and sculpture to comment on and critique press coverage of every major event – from protests in Tunisia and Egypt to the debt ceiling debate, from the Fukushima disaster to the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

Since January 2011, 365 Days of Print has invited small groups of artists for one-month residencies to create work sourcing newspapers and various media outlets. Working under the same deadlines as journalists, artists created work every day that engaged and commented not only on the information and events covered by The New York Times and other newspapers, but on the medium itself and such concepts as bias, objectivity, sexism, consumerism and conflict of interest.

Organized by artists and curators Kenneth Pietrobono and Doris Caçoilo, the exhibition will feature over 120 works and will be installed at both the Dumbo Arts Festival and The Visual Arts Gallery at New Jersey City University. Using a loose chronological format, the exhibit will illustrate news events as they occurred, allowing pieces to engage in a visual dialogue of shared experience. In keeping with the pace of the media cycle, space will be left available for future works by contributing artists throughout the run of the exhibition.

Created by Maya Joseph-Goteiner, 365 Days of Print continues to enlist artists to make new work through 2011. For more information on the project, please visit http://www.365daysofprint.com/

ENTER THE CAMERA OBSCURA by Roxana Marroquin

Join us at the _gaia gallery Friday August 5th for our monthly exhibition. This month we are featuring work by Roxana Marroquin in ENTER THE CAMERA OBSCURA

Long before the inception of photography, it was discovered that in a completely dark (obscura) room (camera) if there was a small hole on one one side, an inverted image would be projected on the opposite wall of the room. This led to the invention of the first camera, the pinhole camera. Taking this simple concept and origin of photography, Roxana Marroquin has turned the _gaia Gallery into a pinhole camera and will be exhibiting the photographs during _gaia’s first Friday of the month exhibit.

Enter The Camera Obscura
Friday, August 5th, 6-9pm
315 Third Street, JC, NJ 07302

We hope to see you!
