V-DAY Jersey City JOINS GLOBAL EFFORT TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

As part of the V-Day Worldwide Campaign _gaia and Looking Glass Theatre present their benefit performance of A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER: Writings To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle.

These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us.

A diverse cast will perform the monologues, directed by veteran director Rose Ginsberg. Assistant Director will be Nadine Friedman.

Proceeds Benefit Hudson County Rape Crisis Center

“What I Want My Words To Do To You” offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York’s Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women delve into their pasts and explore the nature of their crimes and the extent of their own culpability.

STATISTICS ABOUT INCARCERATED WOMEN

  • Nationally, women prisoners are the fastest growing group in the prison population.
  • The vast majority of women in prison have been victims of violence prior to their incarceration including domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and child abuse.
  • Women who are violent offenders are even more likely to have been abused and to be incarcerated for responding to that abuse violently.

Both performances open with a flamenco dance number by Inma Heredia at The 32 Street Playhouse in Union City as part of the V-Day Worldwide Campaign to raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls.

Just as women come in all shapes and colors, “The Vagina Monologues” tell various stories of violence, intimacy, vulnerability, and sexual self-discovery of women across the world. Be ready to see yourself or someone you know in a monologue, laugh, maybe cry and be moved by powerful performances. A few monologues will be presented in Spanish with translations provided.

V-DAY 2006

_gaia and HexTC present a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s Obie Award winning play The Vagina Monologues on March 19th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm at the Silk Mill in Union City. Cost $20 and up.

Featuring monologues in Spanish and English presented by a diverse group of women from the regional area and directed by Lillian Ribeiro the production will predominantly benefit Babyland Family Violence Program, “Project Protect” at YWCA Eastern Union County and “Teen L.I.N.K.S.” at Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan NJ.

In addition to benefiting local anti-violence groups, ten percent proceeds will go to a specific focus of this year’s V-Day international spotlight theme, “The Comfort Women”.

The goal is to demand an apology from the Japanese Government to Korean women who were forced into sexual servitude by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II between 1932 and 1945.  This year, the stories of these horrific war crimes against women were removed from Japanese history and text-books. The Japanese government still denies legal responsibility.

_gaia, a Hoboken-based collective of women’s artists that works to actively support and promote the creativity of local women, has joined the V-Day Worldwide Campaign to raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls through a benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s Obie Award winning play, The Vagina Monologues at Maxwell’s, in Hoboken, on March 20 th . Opening for the performance are friends and supporters of _gaia, the 303s who will make a special appearance.

While the V-Day Campaign is a worldwide movement aimed at stopping violence against women, it benefits anti-violence groups within local communities. _gaia’s V-Day Hoboken 2005 benefit production, featuring a diverse group of women from the regional area and directed Lillian Ribeiro , will predominantly benefit WomenRising of Hudson County. Governed and managed by women, WomenRising assists women and their families to achieve self sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives, through social services, economic development and advocacy services.

In addition to WomenRising, ten percent of ticket proceeds will go to “Women of Iraq, Under Siege” a specific focus of this year’s V-Day Campaign. The goal is to stop the ongoing incidents of rape and abduction by organized gangs, which has increased fear of sexual violence deterring women from returning to work or seeking employment and families from permitting their daughters to go to school.

 

 

 

 

 

the 303s , are a trio band dedicated to making empowering and inspiring music, much of which includes political, identity-formative and reflective lyrics. Ingrid Dahl from the 303s partners with the Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls/Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, which seek to support voice, forms of expression, and empowerment in young women.

While the V-Day Campaign is a worldwide movement aimed at stopping violence against women,it benefits anti-violence groups within local communities.  _gaia’s V-Day Hoboken 2004 benefit production, featuring a diverse group of womenfrom the regional area and directed by Yesenia Beutel and Lillian Ribeiro, will predominantly benefit WomenRising of Hudson County. Governed and managed by women, Women Rising assists women and their families to achieve self sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives, through social services, economic development and advocacy services.


 

 

In addition to Women Rising, ten percent of ticket proceeds will go to “Women in Juarez,” a specificfocus of this year’s V-Day Campaign.  The goal is to stop the ongoing disappearance of women and girls in Juarez, Mexico, immediately across the border from El Paso, Texas.  Despite over 300 of these tragic crimes against women over the last decade, little has yet been done to protect the women of Juarez or to bring the perpetrators to justice.
