_gaia is a collective of women artists and activists creating art, events and opportunities in the visual and media arts, performance and design. Its members actively promote and support the work of local women artists while developing programs that encourage collaboration and create community to help emerging artists in need of studio space, facilities and resources. In pursuit of raising awareness _gaia concentrates on activism, from issues in the local community and the art world to global issues affecting the lives of women.

As part of the V-Day Worldwide Campaign _gaia and Looking Glass Theatre present their benefit performance of A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER: Writings To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle.

These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us.

A diverse cast will perform the monologues, directed by veteran director Rose Ginsberg. Assistant Director will be Nadine Friedman.

Come enjoy a glass of wine and light fare in the atrium, explore exhibitions and galleries, create Victorian-era crafts and sample the museum’s special events. At 6:30 p.m., Doris Caçoilo and Pollie Barden will lead twitter love, a fun and practical guide to “tweeting” and other social media. At 12:30 p.m., help celebrate the release of Leon Yost and Cynthia Harris’s new coffee table book Changing Jersey City, A History in Photographs. Leon Yost will present a slide lecture based on the book in the museum’s theater. The book makes a unique gift and will be for sale in the museum’s gift shop at a special holiday price. Following the lecture, Leon Yost will sign copies of the book in the atrium.

Plus! DJ Rory Stroganoff and DJ Motorfunker of WPRB Radio will be spinning holiday tunes in the atrium throughout the afternoon.
