_gaia is pleased to present the culminating exhibition of the Wonder Women Residency Project WW6: New News is Old News (NNION.) The curators invited ten artists from the New York/New Jersey area to participate in an eight week program addressing the questions: Who mediates the news? How is social media changing your foundation of news? Can technology keep up with history? When was the last time you read the paper? is journalism dead? NNION artists explore personal and cultural understanding and experience of media; the different perspectives of journalism online vs. print; the future of news.

Newspaper stories no longer fit the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of news as “a report of recent events: previously unknown information.” In many respects, we have created an endless source of updated information online and while few people have the time to read the entire newspaper, even fewer can keep up with the minute-to-minute updates via Twitter, blogs, online publications, and RSS feeds.

Projects address the changing voice of news, its’ outlets and content.

thread on newspaper, New York Times Obituaries © Christine DaCruz 2011

Christine DaCruz embroiders life into obituaries published in the newspaper. Utilizing a craft traditionally dominated by women, Christine builds a scenic narrative atop the obituary.

"blowouts," Spills on The New York Times, #6 © Lindsey Muscato, graphite on paper, 22 x 24 inches, 2011

Lindsey Muscato considers the physical experience of reading a broadsheet illuminating details from
NY Times articles in her drawings. The subject is curated through controlled coffee spills.

Crooked Images, Auntie J Perfume © Sharon de la Cruz 2011

Sharon de la Cruz explores racism in celebrity contemporary media through her Aunt Jemima news mokumentay called “Crooked Images”.
