“Then you, my dear friend, are a damn fool”
and other illuminated manuscripts by Melissa MacAlpin
April 06 – 27
Artist reception Saturday April 14 6-9pm
Throughout history, illuminated manuscripts were a way of reassessing important stories, commemorating words in vibrant colors and gilded gold pages. The end results were unique and beautiful, and made the people reading these stories feel more connected to them. In contemporary popular culture, our stories are culled from movies, television, and the Internet. We supplement our selves by quoting and taking comfort from this new scripture.
By representing ourselves with words from specific eras, we are also commemorating the time and places that we are from. My work collects some of my own most interesting and important words picked up in mass media through my lifetime. In these pieces, words spoken by people such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Donna Reed, Owen Wilson, Nora Ephron, and Charles Nelson Reilly are commemorated in sparkling glitter and LED lights.

NJCU GALLERY TO FEATURE CULMINATING EXHIBIT OF RESIDENCY PROGRAM, MARCH 22-APRRIL 18
New Jersey City University will host the _gaia Wonder Women Residency Exhibition, “The Learning Agency,” Thursday, March 22 through Wednesday, April 18 in the Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery (Room 323) of Hepburn Hall, 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.
Curated by Doris Cacoilo, director of _gaia studio in Jersey City and acting director of NJCU campus galleries, and Sonali Sridhar Interaction Designer and Cofounder of Hackruiter. The Learning Agency, will feature individual works by NYC artists: Sharon de la Cruz, Katya Grokhovsky, Kathleen Kranack; Hannah Kirshner, Sonia Louise Davis and Salome Asega. And NJ artists: Linda Hu of Berkely Heights; Cristine Posner of Point Pleasant and Meredith Goncalves of Highland Park.
The exhibit will feature multimedia projects that the artists created during _gaia’s seventh annual Wonder Women Residency. The six-week residency explored the opportunity of redefining the future of global economies by focusing on education, literacy, and the empowerment of women and had the artists reflect on the power of women’s agency in communities and economies. The resulting projects address the possibilities for global change with women at the center of learning, health, governance, and public and private spaces.
Meredith Goncalves and the collaboration of Sonia Louise Davis and Salome Asega present portraiture as empowerment. Hannah Kirshner and Katya Grokhovsky use performance and video to explore gender roles, personal journeys and identity. Christine Posner explores authorship in her work in which she creates a collaboration and exhibition with Geraldine Posner, a photographer during WWII, who was presented with challenges to continue a photography career as a woman in the middle of the century. Sharon de la Cruz uses graffiti to teach the audience about the immense strength of women of color. Linda Hu and Kathleen Kranack have created drawings to present history, female identity and women’s stories.
A special, hand-made, limited edition catalog created by the artists and curators will be available at the gallery.

The Wonder Women residency is hosted annually at _gaia’s Jersey City studio. In 2011 the residency expanded to include an international summer project that traveled to Cyprus last year and will be traveling to Brazil this summer.

The Colcha Project
thecolchaproject.org
“The Colcha Project,” curated by Doris Cacoilo and Jeanne Brasile is being presented at the Walsh Gallery. The traveling exhibition is an ongoing project that uses crochet as a catalyst for bringing people together in collaborative modes of creativity and in exploration of culture and community. In the Portuguese tradition, colcha (quilts) are crocheted for and included in a woman’s bridal chest and may be handed down through generations. “The Colcha Project” was developed by Cacoilo as a way to share this tradition with others, inviting guests to participate in the creation of new colcha while visiting the gallery. Each iteration of the project results in a new quilt, which shall be on display in subsequent exhibitions. The documentation of making each quilt also becomes part of “The Colcha Project” as each participant adds their story to its history.
Join the project!!
In addition to the colcha that have been made, a quilt in progress will be on display in the gallery and visitors will be encouraged to contribute to its making. Each Sunday between the hours of 1pm and 5pm while “The Colcha Project” is on view in the Walsh Gallery, visitors are invited to join the curators and other members of the group to crochet, share their stories and become part of the “The Colcha Project.” Yarn and needles will be provided for those who do not have their own. A potluck lunch will be served each Sunday. Participants are encourage to bring food and stitches to share. Beginners are highly encouraged to come and learn.

2 BROWN GIRLS TALK ABOUT LOVE
New work by Sharon De La Cruz & Charlotte Exantus
THE PROJECT
“We’re two single girls who happen to be brown and like to Skype.
We decided to challenge ourselves by living our lives under the assumption that <3 is real and it can happen to us. We asked ourselves, If <3 is real and it can happen to us, how will we know when it’s here? Through our art, journal entries, recorded dialogues with others and this art show we are both setting out to find the true meaning <3 and using the _gaia gallery space to house our discoveries.
In viewing our personal journeys, we hope that all of this creates a safe space for you to talk about <3.”

Wonder Women 7: The Learning Agency – Call for Entries
The Learning Agency
a Wonder Women project at _gaia
“Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rests the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.”
—Kofi Annan
Women’s equality is a prerequisite for human development. We have the opportunity to redefine the future of global economies by focusing on education, literacy and the empowerment of women. With this in mind, Wonder Women invites artists to reflect on the power of women’s agency in communities and economies. We challenge these artists to explore possibilities with women at the center of learning, health, technology and governance.
The Learning Agency aims to harvest creativity and inspire social change. This artist residency will address issues related to education, economy, displacement, and policy. We are especially interested in digital media and technological explorations of this topic. Every Sunday, beginning January 22nd through February 26th, accepted applicants will meet as a group at _gaia studio to discuss current social issues and topics brought forth by participants. There will be a potluck lunch each Sunday with group discussion and critique of works in progress. All accepted applicants must commit to all Sunday meetings (see schedule below). The program ends with a group show.
