Root System

The fourteenth edition of the Wonder Women Residency Project called Root System asks artists to propose and create artworks as part of a thematic project developed through weekly group meetings over two months. The cohort of ten artists will discuss their ongoing projects, philosophies and processes surrounding the projects and planning for installation and performance. The residency will culminate in an outdoor exhibition at Wildflower Sculpture Park in South Mountain Reservation in September 2026.

Katya Grokhovsky: no face
Feminizing the space. What does that mean? The Art School Project is literally located in a large empty taxi stand, or a garage. The space, according to most artists who have visited and worked there, is haunted. The energy is … Continue reading

“Strength:How do women of color learn how to be strong?”
“Strength” “The strong black woman is a complicated cultural myth. On one hand, she is a deeply empowering symbol of endurance and hope. Her unassailable spirit is uplifting. Her courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity emboldens black men … Continue reading

Salome and Sonia – Proposal
In our collaborative project, we will interrogate collective consciousness by looking inward at our own family archives. While visiting her grandmother in Ethiopia this summer, Salome found a crumpled plastic bag of photographs in a shed. Taken by her late … Continue reading

How To Do Stuff
Homemaking, teaching and nurturing skills remain underpaid, overlooked or even degraded (whether performed by women or men) but are essential to the health of individuals, relationships and societies. And as a result of compartmentalized labor many people grow up inept … Continue reading
Post 1: Katya Grokhovsky -teaching as performance: proposal
I would like to investigate the power of teaching and mentorship as an art form. What does it mean to teach as an art in itself? How can I teach equality? Teaching as performance, as an action of the best … Continue reading
