Homemaking, teaching and nurturing skills remain underpaid, overlooked or even degraded (whether performed by women or men) but are essential to the health of individuals, relationships and societies. And as a result of compartmentalized labor many people grow up inept at caring for themselves and others: they don’t know how to do their own laundry, much less bake a pie, grow a carrot, or darn a sock. I hope to bring attention the importance—and pleasure—of these tasks.
In series of short instructional videos, I will teach basic cooking and cleaning. Within the context of a gallery these videos operate as social commentary; online they flow into the deluge of cooking shows, lifestyle magazines and homemade instructional videos. I intend them to straddle both worlds, and to be at once tongue-in-cheek and utterly sincere.
