This is a new piece, continuing with the original paper scale and approach as the first two works. My current process is slow and painstaking, and I continue to struggle with how to create dynamic spills on the broadsheet directly.
This piece was arrived at by digitally layering a photograph of a coffee spill on my stove top, with a scan of a New York Times article. But I look forward to using new strategies to create the originally intended spills onto the broadsheet newspaper. My next experiment will be to use sizing to coat the paper to make it less absorbent, similar to water color paper, and hopefully allowing for the interesting shapes and spills I was looking for.
I am also interested in pushing the reference of the newspaper as an object by drawing onto paper that is cut to the actual dimension of the broadsheet, and perhaps even creating a center fold, inferring a sort of sculptural aspect to the drawings as they imitate the paper itself.
As I continue to play with how to create dynamic spills and shapes on to broadsheet, I have also become more interested in the front and back reads of the paper with the spill. I’m interested in drawing the same spill as a mirror image diptic, rendering both sides of the sheet of newsprint.
I am looking forward to all of this as I continue to hone a process for these works, and in the meantime, I’m enjoying the results. Feed back welcome! I’m looking forward to being back with you all next week.
