The project that I have proposed to create is to be first informed by a costume that I am currently in the process of making. The costume will be made in the spirit of the three graces in Botticelli’s, La Primavera, and constructed out of blonde hair. I am specifically interested in using the three graces as a point of departure because in Greek Mythology they were associated with the arts almost as thought they were muses. The three graces were believed to endow artists with the abiity to create beautiful works of art. I view them as “givers” of agency, allowing the artist to comment on the state of things.
Essential to the term “news” is how information is disseminated and how we perceive that information. It seems very important to contextualize news as a form of mediation between a happening and a viewer. Yet we understand this idea of “news as mediation” through its obsolesce. That is to say that there will always be something new that we must know about and don’t know about, but at the same time will know about soon.
I am interested in using masks and costumes to discuss the surface as it relates to the space around itself and its ability to convey ideas (which, as I see them, lie below the surface). In relating to the topic of the news, I see the use of a costume or a mask as an interface which is essential to how we absorb and appropriate information. So much like the news as a form of mediation between a happening and a viewer, the costume becomes a mediator between the information and ourselves. I’m thinking specifically that we do not interact with real time media or any other Internet application without an identity, which may be ours, but is more or less our ideas without our bodies.
I am trying to discuss, through a very specific body, how information is translated into inspiration while at the same time questioning who is mediating whom.
PICTURES TO FOLLOW VERY VERY SOON.
