worm composting update-is money poisonous?

I’m attending a free worm composting workshop on saturday from 1-3. It’s given by the Lower East Side Ecology Center this is their website if anyone is intersted: http://www.lesecologycenter.org/

I’m planning to set up my bin this weekend and document the process. I’m excited to welcome these new creatures to my home. I’ve been trying to get the US Treasury to donate shredded currency to the project. They have already said “NO” via voice mail but I have some calls into a couple people. Still haven’t heard back. In the meantime I purchased about $2000 worth of shredded bills for $20 from a guy in Virgina. I had a nice chat with him and he told me that they don’t even shred money anymore in the traditional way but now make some more environmentally kinder goop that they still dump in landfill. I’m definitely following up on that. I can’t believe all this stuff goes to landfill and I might want to follow this thread of information for my project.  I’ve also got a call/email into the Bureau of Printing and Engraving to see if the ink used on money could be poisonous to the worms. I was up worrying about that the other night. I don’t know if they’ll give me any answers on that one (if they even know). The ink composition is probably a secret and –who knows –they might be worried I’m a counterfeiter. The lower east side ecology person I talked to thought the worms would be ok. But I’d feel better if I could know for sure. Anyway, this is pretty typical of my process. I like research.
