In 2001, I created the animation Like a fire burning out of control. It is a portrait for all things unsolvable. Alone in a field of snow, the house is unreachable and seems unsaveable. The animation is based on the work of Virginia Lee Burton and Merle Haggard. Each artist uses somewhat dramatic symbols to examine the day-to-day events that shape our perceptions.
The current economic climate has had a big effect on me and the people I know. We keep returning to the same feelings and conversations: “How am I going to pay for everything?”
This house is a symbol of feelings of insecurity.
I would like to create a still animation—on a shelf would be a series of sculptures of the house burning. Above the sculptures would be a collection of framed pressed pennies. The frames would be ornate (maybe all gold) showcasing the spending of years past. Money so plentiful we made it into tchotchke.
