The last couple of weeks has been two steps forward, one step back, but progress is being made. I had a few set backs with some unsuccessful dyeing. I vainly attempted to force dye some polyester, but alas the polyester won that battle despite my valiant efforts (this was to be the skin of my ham). So, I’ve changed the outer textile to a cotton canvas which has been dyed and will be embellished with some block printing. It’s quite a different approach than using that velvety, bumpy material I had, but I think it will work. I’ve also been scheming and sketching like a madwoman designing each slice of ham that will be on display. Narrowing down what stories I want to tell with what visuals has been the hardest part as distilling down ideas always is for me. I’ve been mulling two of my favorite sculptors’ work for inspiration and process: Tamara Kostinanovsky (check out her meat sculptures!) and Emilie Faif (Stephanie – you’ll love her!). They both have strong work in fibers and soft sculpture which I highly admire.
Here’s some highlights in photos from the last two weeks:
- Freecycled some tapes for Jackie. Half the fun is the pick up down winding dirt roads in the dark!
- Dyeing some cotton canvas for ham skin
- test for quilting the cotton canvas on foam. Thinking of using pearls as the cloves though I think I need brown ones instead of white.
- using my ham doodles as references
