WW9 Stephanie Tichenor

Hello I’m Stephanie Tichenor.

Hi I'm Steph Tichenor

Hi I’m Steph Tichenor

I studied fiber arts at Montclair State University under Carol Westfall then returned for my masters in art education. I like to make new worlds to live in with tiny obsessive detail. My inspirations for works in fiber and paint are found in books and travel and in the backyard. I attempt to softly and gently capture the world. I explore the world and it’s inhabitants with a sincere curiosity. I celebrate the everyday and  believe in good clean fun and being nice. I have shown in solo and group shows in New York and New Jersey as well as Boston, Boise, Atlanta and abroad. This is my second artist residency the first being 365 days of print  in which a group of artist responded to the news media each day for a month.

Some of my previous works:

Undercovers; bespoke burial shroud, crochet and homegrown crystals.

My Proposal for Superfood: a Wonder Women project

Intersecting the emotional, and visual with the edible ideas of Superfood would be a treat.          I have a deep interest in food politics between GMO’s and pesticides, the hunger epidemic, and food allergies, food security, seed saving, animal rights, vegetarianism and soil ecology/gardening/mycology this topic is something that interests me from many angles. I am now living in Seattle were Beacon Food Forest has sprouted up and taken root in the community here. The idea of a public food forest is for the community to grow food together and teach one another. It is a public park,  and what interests me most about this project is the hope to include “all in need of food.”

I propose to use my varied interests in food and food politics to throw a ‘bird party’, a quite fancy party for birds. Squirrels and other tiny critters will also be invited.

Possible products from this idea:

-invitation, decorations, and tea cakes

-snapshots of bird party in action

-Bird party cookbook for kids

-video of bird party

Sketch of idea: find site-possibly in the Beacon Food Forest, make sewn table cloth, make decorations, make invitations, make tiny teacakes of bird seed etc, right down recipes and photograph process for potential cookbook/diy book for kids, set up party, photo and video birds eating at the party
