WONDER WOMEN RETELL THE NEWS

(Nicosia, 24/06/11): The Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC) together with its members European Mediterranean Arts Association (EMAA) and Rooftop Theatre Group and the United States based arts collective _gaia studio present the Cyprus edition of ‘New News is Old News: A Wonder Women Project.’

In January 2011, _gaia studio invited 10 New York & New Jersey based artists to participate in their residency program Wonder Women, exploring the changing media landscape in a project called ‘New News is Old News.’ Now that the work has been completed and exhibited in the U.S., its curators Doris Caçoilo and Maya Joseph-Goteiner along with three of the artists, Christine DaCruz, Sharon De La Cruz and Lindsey Muscato have come to Cyprus upon invitation by CCMC, EMAA & Rooftop to stage a similar program with artists in Nicosia and to present the culmination of this week-long process with an exhibition.

During the residency, the seven-selected Cyprus based artists, Heleniq Argyrou, Kakia Castelli, Eser Keçeci, Gökçe Keçeci, Constantia Manoli, Maria Petrides and Julie Sandor along with the artists and curators from the U.S. meet for critique sessions and discussions related to the media.

In their projects for the exhibition, the artists focus on communication and the content of news in Cypriot media paying particular attention to the representation of human trafficking in the news. Christine Da Cruz and Maria Petrides collaborate to collect oral histories and create embroidered portraits of Cypriot women. Sharon de la Cruz uses the American cultural iconography of Aunt Jemima to present her vision of a unified Cyprus. Eser and Gökçe Keçeci address their grandmother’s complex biography in a large collage installation of archival documents. Julie Sandor deconstructs TV media consumption. Heleniq Argyrou creates experiential work addressing human trafficking through the rhythm of the drum.

The work created will be installed for a public exhibition at the Peace Room located on Ledra/Lokmaci Streets beginning Monday, June 27th at 7:00PM and will remain open until between 10am and 7pm until Thursday, July 1st .

The project is made possible through the generous support of the U.S. Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program (BSP) as well as through a crowd sourcing initiative launched by _gaia studio using Kickstarter.

THE EVENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
