Mairikke Dau’s project proposal

For the Wonder Woman Residency I would like to study the news and make visible a correlation between my concepts of news/current events/information and my fairly abstract yet socially and politically aware paintings while working with the difference created by time spent with any idea. I propose to find a news story that sticks with me and make a painting as a reaction to and a slowed down processing of that news. The paintings might act as the antidote to the current on line format of reading news and subsequently commenting publicly on line. I will be making my own image based long term processing reactions.
I would keep a log as to when I learn about each news story and when I completed each painting. This would make a time line of my own reaction and processing. It would function as a parallel to the reporter who in the age of digital immediacy has less time to process information in order to write an article and the even shorter turn around time of someone who after reading the article then immediately publicly comments on it.
This would prove to be a compelling learning experience for me in that I would be interested to see how the relationship between the news and my artwork would develop. In a broader sense I think it would prove to be an interesting way to bring to light the socio/political implications of more abstract representations.
