Holy Sheet!

Mother of God

Proposal:

As I pondered about the MOG, many popular icons, statues, stories and symbols began to flood my mind. I am very drawn by images of the sacred heart, which is often bleeding, flaming, pierced, illuminated and/or crowned. (The crown, the heart, and the rose are very similar shapes that I would like to play with.)

One of the projects I expect to complete during the residency involves the combination of the sacred heart and concept of white fabric. White fabric is a sign of purity, a signal of surrender, used for protection, etc. I plan to batik the image of the sacred heart on a sheet. It is a metaphor of bloody sheets that one must show a priest to confirm virginity.
