Since I missed the first week, I am just now posting my original prosal:<\/p>\n
As soon as a child can count in America they are indoctrinated into a world that prioritizes possessions above all else. I am never more reminded of this than during the holiday season when my parents charge me with buying Christmas gifts for my elementary-school-age cousins. We Buttons are obsessive board game fanatics; the gifts that I am charged with buying are almost always board games. My trips home to Texas are divided between day-long Monopoly<\/em> games with my mother and late-night\/ early-\u00a0 morning games of Risk <\/em>with my father and brother. Certainly, I am not the only person whose childhood (and now adulthood) was spent fighting over games of Monopoly<\/em>.<\/p>\n For the Wonder Women Residency I will develop a board game, Radicals of Arcadia (working title), that challenges the ways in which typical child\u2019s play normalizes free market capitalism. As an activist, I believe that the pursuit of social justice means the pursuit of a world that organizes itself around the potential of all human beings to live in service to each other. This is what we should be teaching children.<\/p>\n The corresponding values of service can and should be imparted in play.\u00a0 Monopoly inspired the idea for this project, but the game Settlers of Catan <\/em>informs its construction. Settlers of Catan<\/em> is a modular board game. Players build the board as they collect resources based on rolls of die, and the collection and spending of resource cards. Radicals of Arcadia<\/em> will be loosely based on these same gaming principals. The board will be built by players as they are assigned various roles by the roll of dice (doctor, teacher, farmer, etc.) and given infrastructure tiles to build the board. The game will reward players who best strategize uses for their resources.
