{"id":3,"date":"2006-03-31T13:44:51","date_gmt":"2006-03-31T21:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gaiastudio.org\/wordpress\/?p=3"},"modified":"2006-03-31T13:44:51","modified_gmt":"2006-03-31T21:44:51","slug":"ww-meeting-one-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gaiastudio.org\/wonderwomen\/?p=3","title":{"rendered":"WW Meeting One: notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WONDER WOMEN<\/p>\n<p>Discussion ONE:<\/p>\n<p>Anti-Super hero comics<br \/>\nWomen treated poorly in comic books<br \/>\nFor example: killed, raped, dominated, disempowered, good vs. evil, emphasizing bodies, villain characters.<br \/>\nFor example: women + the refrigerator series\/syndrome (green lantern, fantastic 4 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c invisible)<\/p>\n<p>Samples of Wonder Women:<br \/>\nSexuality of heros\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6sexualized or sexual freedom\/empowerment?<\/p>\n<p>One comic project: A female character \u00e2\u20ac\u201c smart girl who can grow her skin to take on different gender, race, and ethnicity.\u00c2\u00a0 She gains power as she gains perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Another idea: a gender \u00e2\u20ac\u0153spray\u00e2\u20ac\u009d where one can literally spray on\/paint one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s gender.<\/p>\n<p>Question:<\/p>\n<p>1. What if our intentions back fire?\u00c2\u00a0 Are they then rendered hypocritical?\u00c2\u00a0 Are they counter productive?\u00c2\u00a0 <Resist in action><br \/>\n2. What is the ultimate solution?\u00c2\u00a0 Can we be subtle and assertive, non-bipolar (i.e. resist dichotomies, extremes).<br \/>\n3. How do we resist mirroring polar opposites?<br \/>\n4. How are we heard if we are not placating to the cookie cutter shape of conformity?<\/p>\n<p>The group considered their roles in relationships and discussed the social constructing of gender, especially how individuals experience voicelessness + marginalization (what are the factors that contribute to this)?\u00c2\u00a0 What are the lessons we learn as we \u00e2\u20ac\u0153watch\u00e2\u20ac\u009d relationships, films, searching for \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthe other\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (which seems to be what we are told to do from the media)?\u00c2\u00a0 How do we question what this pull is?\u00c2\u00a0 How do we resist this pull towards forgetting what we have in ourselves instead of what we lack that is in the control of others?<\/p>\n<p>The Wonder Woman:<\/p>\n<p>Wonder Women stands alone.\u00c2\u00a0 Her power is however, somewhat relating to a dominatrix.\u00c2\u00a0 She lives in a matriarchal society, but yet, is always lonely and always sad.\u00c2\u00a0 She experiences romance, but is always searching.\u00c2\u00a0 Her side kick is a Cheetah, and she flies an invisible plane.\u00c2\u00a0 Many young girls looked up to her, but the image has stayed with them that Wonder Woman stands alone on top of a building.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of her attributes of strength are confusing.\u00c2\u00a0 She has a shield, lasso, cuffs (bondage), wore a tiara (princess), and a bikini.<\/p>\n<p>How does this relate or affect the Representation of American Women from International perspectives?<\/p>\n<p>American women are pretty &#038; attractive (or should be).\u00c2\u00a0 She wears little clothing (a bikini) and tall boots.\u00c2\u00a0 There is an importance of looking good over saving people or kicking ass.\u00c2\u00a0 Women are strong, can be powerful, but within limits.<\/p>\n<p>Young girls NEED to have REAL role models.\u00c2\u00a0 How do we help them when they are saturated with these images?<\/p>\n<p>Discussion of Drag:<\/p>\n<p>Is Wonder Woman a man in drag?\u00c2\u00a0 What would that seem like, change our perspective (for men or women).\u00c2\u00a0 The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153costume\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c of heroism \u00e2\u20ac\u201c psychological drag of masculinity.\u00c2\u00a0 Characters are mimicked, glamorized, fetishizing extremes, mocking, and\/or passing.<\/p>\n<p>Passing: both empowering\/powerful and humiliating; invisible vs. on the spotlight; the experience of being \u00e2\u20ac\u0153found out.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Stories encountering teenage boys: do men hold the cards or do we?\u00c2\u00a0 Why are those who are different treated as objects of hilarity?\u00c2\u00a0 How do we rectify powerlessness moments?\u00c2\u00a0 Do we have authority and do we even need it?<\/p>\n<p>BACKLASH:<\/p>\n<p>Feminism has embraced marginalization \u00e2\u20ac\u201c what has happened now politically + socially?\u00c2\u00a0 The sixties we had statistics.\u00c2\u00a0 And action that began change.\u00c2\u00a0 Now we have been told to remain incognizant, that the work of the past is completely successful (when it is not), and that our leaderships have dissipated\/been vindicated.\u00c2\u00a0 We are more and more pushed into fixed categories of societal expectation, and like an ooze, subtly covered.<\/p>\n<p>We NEED documentation and history (written by those in the margin).\u00c2\u00a0 We are at a time of a political war and what can be a progressive movement.\u00c2\u00a0 What is outside of the circle \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is their power in abnormality and what is the space between abnormal and normal?\u00c2\u00a0 We have been told the fight is over.\u00c2\u00a0 But it is not.\u00c2\u00a0 We must teach, we must share, we must created.\u00c2\u00a0 Women have long since had oral history (very fluid and changing) while it has been favored to have written history (a hierarchy of information and identity expression).<\/p>\n<p>With resisting perfection, idealization, compounding of images, we must continue to learn, reflect, challenge, experience, take risks, and share.\u00c2\u00a0 We must resist the values of consumption!\u00c2\u00a0 And instead, embrace our uniqueness and individuality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WONDER WOMEN Discussion ONE: Anti-Super hero comics Women treated poorly in comic books For example: killed, raped, dominated, disempowered, good vs. evil, emphasizing bodies, villain characters.
