My sister went to the Naval Academy.\u00c2\u00a0 I went to art school.<\/p>\n
As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have continued, many of the people my sister knew have been injured or killed.\u00c2\u00a0 A friend she had known since 1993 was killed in action.\u00c2\u00a0 His helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan in June of 2005, and three days later when American forces were able to get to the crash site, all onboard were found dead.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Two years ago my sister called me on the phone to tell me this story.\u00c2\u00a0 Our experiences are so different and our understanding of these events is so unequal that I felt I was not able to give her the comfort that she needed.<\/p>\n
The life of a Naval Officer is one I think she misses, and the loss of the friends she had as a sailor has forever separated her from that time in her life.\u00c2\u00a0 She has said that since her friend’s death, every get-together with her old navy buddies is different, that there is an emptiness which can’t be ignored or filled.

\nI have not shared the level of personal loss that my sister has faced in recent years.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, my relationship with her has me thinking about this pain, about the world situation, and about loss. What I know of the war is from what I see in a news report.\u00c2\u00a0 It reminds me of a time when I watched my sister and her friends as they grew up together, attending ceremonies, deployments, and homecomings.\u00c2\u00a0 I did not know them as my own friends, but I knew them through my sister.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n
There is something delicate in this story.\u00c2\u00a0 My goal is to tell the story in a way that explores the pain of loss, while respecting the vulnerability of those who lived it from the inside.\u00c2\u00a0 The book, phonecall, is my approach toward this subject.\u00c2\u00a0 I wish to move forward by revising the materials to reflect the integrity of this narrative.\u00c2\u00a0 Additionally, I wish to explore new ideas and methods through my association with other artists.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
