Succulents absorb what they can, as they adapt to arid environments and grow spines. They have mastered waiting. I too have been waiting — for the commencement of a World War. Furious and powerless, I keep track of the bloodshed and the bombs.   Â

With inexplicable awe of our shameful history, I have drawn maps of invasions and advances, and studied the path of deceit. In the past few years, when I speak up, I have been silenced – at dinner tables with relatives, at protests with communities, and I have resorted to waiting, watching and making art. I consider this response very American and symbolic of something much larger — of negligence and impotence.  Â

Today, I feel ready to leave my shell and engage others. After blaming the nation for its indifference and the media for its lack of honest, in-depth reporting, I want to create an interactive art project that will allow people to “manipulate” and exchange ideas about war and peace in the most fundamental way — in a way that combines the hands-on practicum of a Montessori school with the imaginative conjuring up of a War and Peace oval office party.Â

If I am accepted into the Gaia residency, I will create a “War and Peace” structure comprised of books containing the words “War”, “Peace”, and “War and Peace” in its titles. The work will either be “built” at a small local library and then photographed for the Gaia exhibit or, if there is space, it may be “exhibited” at the gallery itself. Individuals from all ages, races, genders and political stripes will help me create this structure, each selecting a book or several. My hope is that the structure might resemble the concrete houses in which Palestinians are living in Gaza or it could be a leaning tower of Babel/war and peace Bibles or a fort made from swatches of camouflage.  Â

The work will ask questions rather than indoctrinate. Inside the structure I will have a tape playing that will ask people simple, complex, personal and impersonal questions such as: when was there not war, why is there war, what does war resolve, who ultimately wins…I may also include a version of Scrabble for war, Monopoly for peace, pick up sticks for treaties. Near the exit I will have long scrolls of paper on which people can write their personal histories of war — in pencil — to emphasize the impermanence of history and the fact that truth can be annihilated as easily as it can be fabricated. With these histories I will create an artist book.Â

Below is my original proposal-Â Â Since March of 2003, when America first invaded Iraq, I began referring to the United States as a cactus.
