First off, I would like to apologize for falling of the face of the Earth! I did not think it was going to be as difficult or time consuming to execute my BFA show while trying to finish up this project. As an update on that, the UN\/DOCUMENTED<\/em> exhibition went excellently and I already have secured it in one future showing and am speaking with some people about a possible second opportunity. Thanks for all the good wishes and support, as you all know being among encouraging Wondrous Women helps tremendously in the strive.<\/p>\n

In the past few weeks, with my exhibition and all the opportunities that have followed, I have been trying my best to publicize the residency as well as _gaia in general. I had a few occasions to get my working project reviewed at the Society of Photographic Education National Conference in Atlanta, GA, that I attended during my spring break in March. Volunteering at the conference was the absolute opposite of a “break” but plenty of good came of it. Although I only had the concept secured and the preliminary pieces, the repetitive aspect of the work allowed those viewing it to grasp and respond to what the work was going to be. I received much positive feedback and have been well encouraged to continue in the direction I have been heading.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, for the purpose of the updating, there is a linear process that needs to happen to create each piece. If you can remember, there is quite a bit of research that needs to go on to fuel the source of the work. Not only is VHS film out of date for publishing news, but also, microfilm is in it’s slow demise. Most of these past weeks have been spent in one of the very select few libraries that contain both the microfilms AND the film reader. As I can not take the films out, and library hours are being cut along with anything else that is good for the world, I am a little limited as to when I can do the research, although its almost finished. While going through the microfilms I take notes tallying how many stories are on the front page, how many are about the spill, and how many stories are in the national section pertaining to news other than the spill. Underneath, I number and list each article, including page numbers, about the oil spill or anything related to the blowout.<\/p>\n

This is a digital composite of the 30 articles making up Week 7. These articles were then divided and printed onto 7 different films.<\/p><\/div>\n

With these notes, I then go on NYTimes.com to search for articles. When I find the article I am looking for, I then copy and paste the text into a layer in Photoshop, and format it to simulate the New York Times. I also need to adjust the size of the text depending on the length of the article, longer articles get smaller text to fit more information on the page and vise versa. Usually three to five different articles will be layered together to make one transparency film so that means that there is anywhere from one to seven films for each of the 35 weeks.<\/p>\n

Finally comes the shortest, easiest part of making the pieces, and the only part that the viewer actually sees. I brush the chemistry onto to paper. After it dries I layer the films on the light-sensitized areas, and place it in a UV light exposure unit for anywhere between five to forty-five minutes depending on how many films are used.
