I found myself amazed by the amount of dryer sheets that began to accumulate and got this image of a wedding dress made from dryer sheets. I felt that this image really solidified my most recent internal struggle, the question if I really want to get married and be expected to “do the laundry.”Â
As I pondered this new image/idea, I found the WWIII residency opportunity and began to explore the notion that we could find ourselves at the brink of a third world war. As I read the objectives of the residency, asking applicants to “reflect fears, concerns and protest in their artwork”, I realized that my current idea would be the perfect forum to express these larger issues. The two world wars served as a catalyst for woman to break from the mold of “woman’s work” and the tight confines of the domestic sphere, the very things which I was struggling with. However, if I took that metaphor, this “dress” made from a domestic by-product(dryer sheets), and used it as the canvas from which to tackle larger issues it could really create a point of discussion with a viewer.Â
I realized that I would be able to take this project even further by exploring the psychological effect that different styles of dress can rely to the viewer. I hope to explore including hand sew text into the layers of the dress, allowing just another forum in which to make a statement.
During the term of the residency, I would hope to complete 2-3 dresses, made exclusively from dryer sheets and added text. I also considered photographing these dresses, either from a free standing form that I make from myself or to push the second stage of this proposal into a self portrait series using these fabricated dresses.Â

While doing laundry for my boyfriend and I, I began to question the ideas of domesticity and the “traditional” role of woman.
