Transforming and recycling this material by inserting it into a different scenario gives it a new, autonomous life. Recently I’ve been thinking of how to use antiquated technology as raw material to make artwork and also hearing the debates about free speech in press after the release of confidential information on WikiLeaks. I realized a correlation exists between this new model of publishing and using old technology in work to symbolize an end to one period and beginning of another.

The videotape ribbon is a neutral, deep, black-brown color, smooth and reflective, like seeing your reflection in a muddy pond. The pieces themselves are somewhat interactive, as the ribbons are delicate and move when a person passes or breathes near the object.

To me, videotape has a familiar and nostalgic quality, and comes from a different time of media and news dissemination. The image here is affixed to the wall, but the project I would like to complete would be a free-standing piece and able to be viewed from any angle. I am inspired by the Donald Judd’s minimalist architectural pieces, Tara Donovan’s use of everyday objects, and Jesus Rafael Soto’s use of line and repetition.

These videotapes represent an old era of news reporting, when television provided the best, most up to date source of news. In the 1970’s the industry began to use videotape instead of film because it was cheaper and less obtrusive. These analog videotapes have now become obsolete, and are being replaced by hard disk and digital tape technology used for live streaming broadcasts. At the moment, the possibility of transparency in organizations is being debated as the internet puts control into the hands of a new journalism, and provides a check to uncontrolled power. I am interested in the constant change in media as a result of technology, and its impact on society. This project symbolizes the death of old media, and leads us to think about its replacement.

The project I am proposing is a three-dimensional structure constructed from discarded videotape containing news media.
