Fado is simply a form of song that can be about anything, mostly it evokes a feeling that could be best described as nostalgia. Listening to fado with my father who immigrated to the US in the 1960\u2018s and who is now in his 70\u2018s, allows me to get to know him by way of the memories these songs awaken. The Portuguese community as a whole have a tremendous sense of pride in their culture and fado is the song that embraces their soul. My intention is to understand fado through the people those songs were meant to speak to, my parents, their friends, and so on. These songs are a reminder of a simpler time and forces them to recognize how far they have come.<\/p>\n
The ironbound section of Newark is home to a large Portuguese community, most of the residents frequent Ferry Street for their regular shopping needs and it is these people that I plan on including in this project. I will record each interview and then photograph each person.
